Their professional journeys have intertwined for more than four decades — beginning in the early days of neurotransmitter research at London’s Institute of Child Health, where a shared fascination with pterin and monoamine metabolism first brought them together. Since then, they have each built extraordinary international careers advancing the science, diagnostics, and understanding of neurometabolic and neurotransmitter disorders.

Dr Keith Hyland, recently retired as Director of Neurochemistry at Labcorp and co-founder of Medical Neurogenetics Laboratories (Atlanta, USA), has dedicated his career to pioneering analytical methods that shaped the global understanding of neurotransmitter metabolism. His work has been published in leading journals such as Neurology, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine, and has guided diagnostic practice across continents.

Professor Simon Heales, Director of the Neurometabolic Unit at the National Hospital, Queen Square, and UCL Professorial Research Fellow, continues to lead one of the world’s foremost diagnostic and research laboratories for mitochondrial and neurotransmitter disorders. His work has been central to embedding CSF neurotransmitter testing within the UK National Health Service, providing life-changing diagnoses to families worldwide.

Together, they represent the perfect pairing of innovation and experience — scientists whose friendship and professional collaboration have helped define the field of neurotransmitter disorders from its earliest discovery through to today’s clinical practice.
