Professor Nick Greene

Biography

Nick Greene is Professor of Developmental Neurobiology and Deputy Director (Research) at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London. Nick established his research group at UCL in 2001, focussing on development and disease of the central nervous system. Principal areas of research include congenital anomalies, particularly neural tube defects, and disorders associated with impaired folate one-carbon metabolism. The objective this work is to understand the underlying mechanisms with the goal of developing novel treatments and preventive therapies.

Among Neurotransmitter Disorders, Nick’s group have a major interest in Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH), a life-limiting condition characterised by accumulation of glycine. They have developed and characterised several novel mouse models for the major causative genes GLDC and AMT. Use of mouse models is complemented by analysis of cell lines and iPSC-derived cells and organoids. Ongoing research is further investigating the complex disease mechanism, using a multidisciplinary approach integrating molecular, cellular and metabolic analysis. This programme runs alongside development of novel therapies for which there is a major unmet need, with modalities under investigation including AAV and lentiviral gene therapies and other approaches.

Research is currently funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust, NIH, Action Medical Research, UCL Technology Fund, Joseph’s Goal and the Mikaere Foundation.
